The World Health Organization (WHO) warned Thursday that the Zika virus is “spreading explosively” in the Americas. WHO officials predicted that up to 4 million people could be infected with the virus by year end. Of particular concern with the mosquito-borne disease is the rising number of cases of microcephaly. Although it is not yet known whether Zika is behind the increase, reports of babies born with the rare condition—in which infants are born with unusually small heads and damaged brains—have been increasing significantly in Brazil, where the virus is spreading.
