A new study finds that mobile phone text messaging can significantly increase the likelihood that a middle-aged patient with chronic disease will follow his or her medication regimen. The meta-analysis included 16 studies, including 5 that used personalization, 8 that used two-way communication, and 8 that used a daily text message frequency. Overall, text messaging boosted medication adherence, an effect that was not sensitive to the intervention duration or type or disease, nor the text message characteristics.
