Emergency department personnel often administer ketamine for procedural sedation of young patients, but analysis suggests that children older than 13 years are more likely to experience adverse respiratory and airway events with this anesthetic agent. New research published in Pediatric Emergency Care indicates that propofol, which works faster and also wears off more quickly than ketamine, is a safe option for older teenagers in this setting.
