Motor vehicle traffic (MVT) crashes, firearm-related injuries, and drug poisonings are the three largest contributors to the United States’ decreased life expectancy compared with other high-income countries, according to a new report. These three outcomes result in more than 100,000 deaths per year in the United States. Using data from the U.S. National Vital Statistics System and the WHO Mortality Database, researchers calculated U.S. death rates and compared them with 12 high-income countries.
