Hypertension affects more than a quarter of adults in the United Kingdom, and many of these individuals also have comorbidities. Since these comorbidities may be of greater concern to patients than hypertension itself, many hypertensive patients do not fill out their first prescription. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provides guidelines for treating hypertension and comorbidities such as chronic kidney disease and diabetes.
