New research suggests that patients without diabetes with insulin resistance and a history of ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) could benefit from pioglitazone. The study, supported by the NIH’s National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, found that patients who received the drug used for type 2 diabetes had lower risks of stroke or myocardial infarction. More than 3,800 patients with a recent ischemic stroke or TIA were assigned to receive either pioglitazone or placebo. The primary outcome was fatal or nonfatal stroke or myocardial infarction.
