Last year in Charleston County, 8,098 properties, or 8.9% of all properties in the county, were considered to be seriously underwater, meaning the total loan amount for the property was at least 25% higher than the property’s estimated market value. Nearly 23,000 properties were equity-rich, meaning the homeowner had at least 50% equity.
