A new study in Critical Care Medicine finds that taking daily low-dose aspirin may offer protection against death from a Staphylococcus aureus blood infection. Swiss scientists followed 838 cases of S. aureus infection from 2001 through 2013, and matched 157 from the group who were taking aspirin with 157 controls who were not taking low-dose aspirin. After 30 days, 27.4% of the controls had died, compared with just 12.1% of those on low-dose aspirin. Taking low-dose aspirin was linked to a 42% lower risk of death, when other factors were considered.
