Pharmaceutical firms are increasingly advertising on television for drugs treating serious, life-threatening conditions or for those with relatively small patient populations—often expensive medicines prescribed by specialist doctors. The shift reflects the fact that as drugs for many common conditions lose patent protection and face generic competition, branded drug companies increasingly are relying on revenue from drugs for serious and sometimes rare conditions.
