A new study shows an association between proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and an increased risk of dementia among older adults. German researchers conducted a prospective cohort study using observational data on more than 73,600 patients from 2004–11. The patients were aged 75 years or older and free of dementia at baseline. The data, taken from the largest German statutory health insurer, show that 2,950 patients took regular PPIs, such as omeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, or rabeprazole.
