Synbiotics, a mixture of prebiotics and probiotics, have been used to prevent and treat atopic dermatitis (AD). Researchers evaluated the efficacy of synbiotics in AD treatment using a large database of studies, with the incidence of AD as an outcome measure. Of the eight studies that met the selection criteria, six were treatment studies and two were prevention studies. In the 6 treatment studies, researchers found that the overall pooled change in the Severity Scoring of Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD) index for patients treated with synbiotics for 8 weeks was -6.56.
