A testosterone gel provides modest benefits for men aged 65 years and older, according to new research. The study involved 790 older men with a serum testosterone concentration of less than 275 ng per deciliter and symptoms suggesting hypoandrogenism. Participants received either testosterone gel or placebo gel for 1 year. The data show that treatment raised serum testosterone levels to the mid-normal range for men aged 19–40 years, and the increase in testosterone levels was linked to greater sexual activity and other factors.
