More young patients are being treated with antipsychotic drugs for nonpsychotic conditions such as autism and Tourette syndrome as well as for off-label indications including aggression, mood dysregulation, and impulsivity. However, based on research findings in adults, there is concern surrounding unfavorable cardiometabolic outcomes from antipsychotic use. In addition to weight gain and dyslipidemia, the risk for type 2 diabetes is particularly worrisome given the correlation between early onset and increased morbidity and premature death.
